Why did you become a yoga teacher? Who and/or what are your biggest influences?
I was very sick with Lyme Disease. Yoga helped me on a mental
level with staying strong and positive. With the variety of styles and levels of yoga, I was able to practice physically even though my energy and strength was low.
How has yoga helped you to be a better person?
Yoga changed me in so many ways. I am more mindful, aware, compassionate, open, and understanding to everything.
What is your personal mission statement as a yoga teacher?
Yoga has made such a change in my life. I am grateful for the teachers who had an impact on my life and passed on the beautiful teachings of yoga in a way that I was able to apply to my life. As a teacher, I want to be able to pass on the teachings of yoga so that it may have an impact on someone’s life.
What do you think constitutes an excellent yoga instructor?
Knowing the different levels of yoga—the philosophy, the physical practice, the mental practice, and the spiritual practice—and helping people take this practice and adapt it to enrich their lives.
What do you recommend to the beginner student? To the seasoned student?
I recommend a beginner’s class to both the beginner student and the seasoned student. We are students for life, and always going back to the basics is valuable for all of us.
How do you take your yoga off the mat?
I practice yoga on the mat about one hour a day and off the mat the rest of my waking moments. It is a lifestyle, including the way you treat people and treat yourself, and the way you think and act. It is everywhere!!!!
What is the one pose you are most proud of getting into?
Flying Pigeon. I had been practicing yoga but was not introduced to this pose. I pretty much got into it the first time I tried it, and it taught me that because the rest of my practice was solid, my body was strong enough and flexible enough. Practice, practice, practice. For me, it is not about getting into these challenging poses.
What is your favorite time of day to practice yoga?
My favorite time of day to practice is in the morning. I have always been a morning person and it sets the tone of my day.
Where is the best place you have ever practiced yoga?
I will never forget the time I took a class at a local studio in Playa Del Carmen, Mexico. The front of the room had a huge picture window with the sun shining down on tons of beautiful lush tropical plants. The instructor came in and taught an amazing class in half Spanish/half English. It was amazing and beautiful.
What is your favorite music to listen to while practicing yoga?
I like Wade Morissette. I saw him at a Kirton once.
What else do you want students to know about you?
I still struggle with Lyme Disease on a daily basis, and yoga helps me on a daily basis. It’s a lifelong practice!!!
